SHADOWS IN THE SUNSHINE STATE: ART BASEL MIAMI

In the late 1660s, Sir Isaac Newton revealed light as the sole source of color. Over 300 years later, Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto revisited Newton's experiment, building a chromatic chronicle of shifting shadows produced by a prism in a light-filled room, using a Polaroid camera as his capture device. This year, Hermès transformed 20 of Sugimoto's photographs into limited-edition scarves. Titled "Couleurs de l'Ombre," the collection represents the French house's third edition of its carré d'artiste and will be on view Friday through Sunday at Hermès' temporary space: 175 N.E. 40th St. in the Design District.
